Fairgrounds

The history of fairs is established over many centuries, often evolving from a complex structure of feasts & markets which formed the basis for medieval trade.

With improved distribution by railway in the Victorian epoch, trading fairs declined sharply, though the disappearing need for vigorous barter allowed the element of fun making to emerge supreme. Combining the new technologies developed through the mechanisation of agriculture & the art of exhibiting with brilliantly contrived flamboyance, the modern Showman was born.

At first the small capacity, hand cranked roundabouts relied on human muscle or horse power to entertain. Steam Powered rides were developed on a larger, faster, more exhilarating scale from the early 1870s, some driven by an integral engine, others by the Showmen’s specification Traction Engine which was used to transport the ride. These magnificent machines presented an awesome spectacle as they travelled through Victorian Britain, often hauling several trailers comprising of the ride & living accommodation.

Once at the Fair ground, the engines’ work was far from finished.

Driving an electric generator, they would provide power to the ride, & being on display, they were decorated with an array of bright lights to flaunt their polished brass & brightly coloured paintwork.

Soon, pleasure seeking Victorians were able to experience an atmosphere like nothing ever before.

Early roundabouts sought to recreate experiences previously reserved for the well to do such as horse riding, cycling, motoring & sailing.

The Extravaganza is proud to present examples of some of the finest attractions to survive from the Victorian Steam Fair era. Ashley’s Steam Gallopers of 1887 make a welcome return, as does the Brooklyn Cakewalk of 1895. First time attendees bring a fresh feel to the Fair with the tallest Lighthouse Slip crowning the top of the Upper Mostyn St at a towering 52 feet tall, & special guest Professor Voltini presents his truly authentic Victorian electrocution show on the Promenade Arena.

As you wander through the fair, why not take a moment to compare these traditional amusements with the up to date thrill rides in the modern section.

The Victorian’s reaction to these new fangled joy rides becomes easy to imagine as we marvel at the computer controlled hydraulic machines of today, proving there’s no limit to the number of ways to go round & around & up & down!

Hold tight….. It’s going to be a fast ride! The Llandudno Extravaganza Fairground extends across the whole town and we are proud to have a great mixture of old and new, from traditional steam powered merry-go-rounds to the latest innovations in thrilling rides.
