Ghost Trains

In 1862 Professor John Henry Pepper created a Ghostly illusion for an audience at the Royal Polytechnic using methods of the magic lantern phantasmagoria (literally a gathering of ghosts) popular from the 1790s.

Always at the forefront of innovation, fairground showmen were quick to pick up on the Pepper’s Ghost illusion, and the fairground Ghost Show emerged around 1873, with huge ornate structures built by George Orton (Burton-Upon-Trent). These shows were the precursors to the Bioscope Show, and were quickly surpassed at the turn of the century as the moving image hit the fairground & for a while the Ghost faded into the background.

George Orton went on to form the company Orton and Spooner, who began manufacturing Ghost Trains in the 1930s. The ride was actually a cross between a show and ride, and emerged at a time when mechanical rides were developing at a rapid rate. By the 1950s fairground Ghost Trains were rising in popularity, & Coventry based company Supercar invented the dual-level Ghost Train allowing a better use of space & a big dipper style thrill dip to be performed on the front of the track.

By the late 1980s the Ghost Train ride was now travelling on multiple levels, & as the ride got higher the need to extend backwards into a twisting labyrinth of rooms was slowly diminished. The Ghost Train rose vertically from a smaller and smaller footprint, and the classic challenge of creating a thrill using a multitude of darkened rooms was replaced by a set of twisting and turning surprises as the carriage descends from its highest point. In many ways the Ghost Train was becoming less of a show, a product of the showman’s imagination, and more of a thrill ride.

Here at this year’s Extravaganza we present two Ghost Trains, with Craig Harrison’s traditional single level & Robert Lynch’s more up to date multi level.

Try them both ….if you dare!

Hauled to Llandudno from their Nottinghamshire base by Scammell Showtrac, the 85’, three trailer road train is an impressive sight, topped off by the traditional style showmans’ living wagon bringing up the rear.

Howard Bros

Built 1886 by Savages of Kings Lynn, (centre engine No. 664) & delivered to the Studt family in South Wales, ownership passed through the hands of a number of well known Showmen prior to aquisition by its current owners, the Howard Bros of Derbyshire in 2005.

Within just seven months from obtaining the three abreast, twelve section steam gallopers, brothers Ian & Gary completed restoration with the addition of a Limonaire 54 key organ.

The gallopers can be seen at fairs throughout the UK, often accompanied by the Brothers’ Fowler Showmans Road Locomotive “Renown”, presenting a first class display of Steam Power Preservation.

This year is the 17th Year for our Transport Festival the biggest and now one of the best liked events in the U.K. with a thousand + Exhibitors and thousands of Transport enthusiasts from all over the U.K. and Ireland coming to partake and visit our sea front Showground at Bodafon Fields, Llandudno.

We attract a large range of exhibits including some 350 Commercials of Lorries, Military and Buses, 140 + Motorcycles, 130 Tractors, with Bicycles, Stationary Engines Miniature Steam and some 350 Vintage and Classic Cars per day, with over 100 Trade Stand and Autojumble stall in their midst. Exhibitors start arriving from Friday and settle in ready for the gates to open at 9-00am on Saturday morning.

Shuttle Bus Service

From Transport Festival to Extravaganza

Once again the Devon & Dorset Group will be running the Shuttle Bus Service with three vehicles assisted by Wythall, St Helens and Manchester Bus Museums with also privately owned Bus owners who are able to join in. One of the Buses coming up from Dorset is Robin Woodcocks Ex Midland Red 1968 BMMO S23 an example of the final type built by BMMO, hopefully this vehicle will be used on Service and the evening Road Runs, last year our Shuttle Bus Service moved 27,000 people to and fro from the Transport Festival to the Extravaganza.

Llandudno & Colwyn Bay Tram Society

On the Showground is the Llandudno & Colwyn Bay Tram Society restoration project, the Society will be raising funds with their ex Bournemouth open top Tram which is similar to the Trams that ran from Colwyn Bay to Llandudno through our Showground up until the late fifties. The Tram body is mounted on a road going trailer and certainly brings back memories of the days when they still ran between the two Towns.

Saturday Evening Conwy Road Run

Starting 6-00pm from the main gate [weather permitting] the run will take us to Conwy round the Town and return, open to all classes and will take approx one hour, if you do not have a vehicle to take part and you would like to go to Conwy, Buses will run from the Showground entrance from 5-30pm.

Sunday on the Showground

Llandudno Crosville Gathering

Once again the Crosville Gathering takes place on Sunday with privately owned Ex Crosville vehicles meeting up with some going out on Service.

With over 350 Classic and Vintage Cars attending with Car Clubs Kilkenny Motor Club, Carlow Vintage & Classic Club, the North East Vintage Car Club all from Ireland and Classic Commercial Vehicles from as far away as Scotland, a Military Display, American Trucks, Motorcycles, Welsh owned modern Trucks, Heavy haulage section and a Light Commercial and Classic Van section, a Horticultural display, Stationary Engines, Tractors. At 11-00am Traffic and weather permitting, some of the fine vehicles attending this year will leave the Showground to join the Traction Engines in the Street Parades which will leave at 12-00 midday from the Sea Front end of Vaughan Street.

Great Orme Road Run

6-00pm sees the start of the Sunday Evening Road run taking in the route of the Marine drive at the base of the Great Orme all classes are welcome apart from Double Decker Buses and again takes around 1hr weather permitting.

Steam Parade on Pier

At 6-00pm a parade of Miniature Steam Engines will leave the show ground on Sunday evening and travel along the promenade to the pier entrance then along the pier to the end staying for ½ an hour then returning to Bodafon Fields.

Parade Monday

Monday the gates open at 9-00am, Street Parade at 12 O’clock midday. The show closes at 5-00pm weather permitting.

Farm Park

Entry in to the Farm Park thanks to Mr Mark Roberts will again be free to Transport Festival visitors where you can wander around the Paddocks of rare farm breeds and see the extensive aviaries containing Owls and Tropical birds from around the world or take a stroll along the Farm Heritage trail or just sit and dine in the Restaurant.
